The Workshop Brewing Company has become a must-visit for myself whenever I am in TC. They have a beer to fit any and every taste, and each one is world class. The environment welcomes visitors to linger and experience new tastes, with delicious eats made from sratch to acompany any flight. The service is great and relaxed. A perfect place to end your day. My recomendation: order a pint of wrecking bar with a side of their house-made pretzels, then head outsided to relax on a bench to enjoy the view of Lake Michigan.

I didn't have any food here, and in a fashion very unlike me, I only tried the Cold Chisel Biere Blanche. That being said I'm normally pretty picky about my Belgian beers, and this one was delicious! The general atmosphere of the place is a bit dark, but fun, and the staff is very helpful and friendly. Also, for non beer drinkers, they have a nitro coffee that is pretty amazing.

First - superb service, friendly and very inviting. Owner spoke to me about brewing and the business, really great guy. Great style based beers brewed well and great food as well. We had a ton of kids with us and they all played games there... Finally, really nice open air inside with overhead door up and patio area.. What are you waiting for? Go!

This place is awesome. Great beer and the soft pretzels were a good snack to go along with the brews.

Came in here a couple weeks ago on Saturday night to catch the Crane Wives and drink a beer. Overall, really liked the place. The size of the crowd seemed a bit overwhelming for the size of the place, but we managed. This was my first time in here, so I'm not sure if it's regularly crowded or what. Not going to lie...having a place to sit would've been nice. Band was fantastic. Beer was good. Crowd was upbeat and friendly. Definitely would give this place another shot when I'm in town next. Maybe I'll opt for a time other than Friday night just so I get to enjoy more that it has to offer.

#4 on our list of breweries in the Traverse City area. This is our 2nd day in the city and wanted more!! This place was highly recommended by locals. This is my favorite brewery of all time!!! Located in the Warehouse district. I love how open and spacious this bar is! Rich bold colors. Long tables and hanging from the ceiling are beer bottles recycled as lighting fixtures. They have foosball table, pinball machines, and even books! We wanted to try the beer flights: $12.00 -Ball peen: ESB -Sickle: Saison -10lbs Sledge: IPA -10lbs Cascade: IPA Can I say WOW!!! All beers were super smooth and did not leave a bad after taste (not too hoppy). For appetizers we got the Apricot baked camembert- with candied pecans, roasted garlic and grilled baguette for $9.00. I highly recommend trying this!! The candied pecans and the garlic tasted so well together. What a great combo! Bread was extra soft. We literally cleaned our plate! My husband loved this place so much that he got a fitted grey cap for $25.00. Which has a small logo on the front right hand corner. Everything was perfect. The beer, service, food. I highly recommend trying this brewery if you are in the Traverse City area. Great Stuff!!!!

A nice beer hall feel with good food and pretty good beer. Came here with some friends of mine from TC. They had been interested in coming here for a while, so we decided to head on over. The brewery is nicely located just outside of the downtown area making it easy to find parking and allowing for a more calm, beer-drinking environment. The menu that I saw on Yelp was different than the menu I saw at the restaurant, which makes me think they change their food menu on a regular basis -- a plus for people who will attend this pub frequently. The food we ordered was delicious (the BBQ sampler). I don't know where they put their smoker, but the pulled pork was tasty, the brisket was tender, and the chicken was amazing! An additional plus, the sweet corn served was fresh. The beer list was quite sizable. I find this an admirable quality for any establishment wishing to serve beer. The flight I ordered was good, but out of the five beers I had, only two were note worthy -- the Wrecking Bar and the Cold Chisel. Those two alone are reasons why I might come back here the next time I'm in TC. If you're looking for a chill place to enjoy beer and eat food, think of adding this place to your list.

Very yummy! They use organic ingredients, and local items. We didn't eat but the menu, while small, looked yummy. Try the Bastard Rasp in the summer, or Tenpenney all year. $12 for 2 pints

Fantastic environment and kid friendly. Great beers, good small plate selection, and well tended bar. We visit Traverse at least once a year and always looking for a non-tourist, nice local hangout. We will definitely be back.

This local gem is located in the old Right Brain building just on the West side of downtown, tucked away in the alley. It might be a bit of a challenge to find a spot to park during a peak time but most of the time there is adequate parking available nearby. The decor is set up for a good time and it is visited by locals and tourists alike. I found that there are usually younger people having a good time in there but nothing that would make it uncomfortable for anyone that walks in the door. The idea of this place is craft beer and craft food. Most of there beers are called "journeyman" and are not "light beers". I thoroughly enjoy sipping on a saison called the sickle while my wife likes the cold chisel which is more of a Belgian wheat. The food looks and tastes amazing as well. We like to have a spent grain pretzel with beer mustard as a snack or a smoked bison burger with bacon and cheese. Whatever you try, you'll be happy. There are even some games in the back corner if you're staying awhile or you can sit with your feet up on the couch for a bit. Whatever your pleasure, you should enjoy your time here.

Excellent food, beer, and wine! Their homemade chips with pulled pork, and cheese fondue is excellent. Their rib tips and greens are listed as an appetizer, but very filling and delicious. Just the right amount of heat. Great service as well. Foosball table and pinball tables for the kids or kid at heart.

The beer is good and varied. I like that. The decor is 'workshop.. machine shop'.. and works. some very clever tables made from table saws. They have music just about every night of the week. It's kind of remarkable actually. A lot of the music is really really good. They even have a jazz sit in.. which is simply outstanding with some of the best musicians in the area. Food... well, it varies. They try to do local foods... and that is really great. I've had a varied number of sandwiches which are generally very good and large. So far they serve no 'extras' with them.... except maybe a pickle. I'd love it if they starting making chips or something like that. The soups I've had haven't been my thing... I have not like any of them so far. But the chef works at it and is experiments with various flavors etc. Some people seem to like them. What I want is for them to have a dessert... or cookies or popcorn or chips.. anything that is sort of snack food. Not only would they sell more beer (people get thirsty!) but it just something a cafe sort of restaurant should have. Overall, it's a cool place for a lot of reasons. Though I'm there every single week, the bartender never seems to recognize me or greet me... and really the staff seems somewhat oblivious to those of us who order food and drinks. They are pretty new though and I'll give them a break because they support local music and because they make good beer.

Was able to come by and check this place out on my last TC visit. Loved the set up of the place. They were pretty slammed so the wait staff seemed sort of frazzled and not the friendliest when I went up there, but when the server brought out our flights to our table she was really nice and walked us through what she brought out. They let us sit out of the patio with our pups which earns points in my book! The actual beers we tasted were really good and I think I only had one that I didn't love, and it was a super light beer that I am sure they have to keep on tap to keep the Bud Light drinkers out there happy. The flight seemed expensive at 12 bucks a pop, but then they brought it out and it was a pretty generous sampling of each kind.

This is a bit of an incomplete review as I only had one beer, but it's what I've got so far. They're located on a small side street that almost seems like an alley. The location is pretty cool with tables made out of table saws and various other things that fit the theme. Ordering was just at the bar. Normally my first time at a brewery I'll get a flight, but here the flight was $12 for 4 beers, which was a bit step for me. I ended up getting a pint of a barrel aged porter and it was pretty good. My friend who was also there with me had a weird service issue. The bartender who helped him couldn't get his credit card to work, and then completely forgot to pour his beer. It's a brewery, so pouring the beer should be a pretty obvious step to any transaction. I'm not really sure what was going on there. Either way I'll try and come back sometime when I'm nearby and give it a closer look.

We recently enjoyed a flight of beer here. Unfortunately, not being locals, we picked an unfortunate time (very late afternoon) to stop in -- while the bar was open, the kitchen was not, and the only foods available were local bagged potato chips and Cajun candied peanuts -- the potato chips were overpriced, but the peanuts were pretty good snacking. Which we needed, because our flight came to us, not in the usual juice glasses, but in substantial goblets.(Plan for a designated driver!) On tap that day were a couple of Belgian ales that were very good; we also enjoyed the two porters...nice and smooth. The ambience of the Workshop is warehouse-minimalist and fun -- think a high school production of a stage version of "Reds," with faux-Marxist posters (highly ironic in Michigan's highly competitive microbrew market) . We (50-somethings) were probably the only people on the whole block who actually remember the Cold War, but we still enjoyed ourselves. This microbrewery has live music, spotlighting the lively local music scene, and I'm sure it's SRO on weekend nights. The manager told us that they're working to improve the food choices as the summer people start arriving and creating some more cash flow. If you make the Northwest Lower Michigan beer tour, definitely put the Workshop on your list.

The last place I tried on my wine, cider, beer tour. I enjoyed the beers I tried. Owner and brewer introduced themselves which was pretty cool.

Loved everything about this brew pub. The beers were terrific across the board - the porter was wonderful. The food was absolutely terrific - great, eclectic choices, well-made and locally sourced. Cool vibe, live music ... We didn't want to leave.

Came here because of the amazing reviews and we were not disappointed. Ordered the Cold Chisel brew which was light and tasty, perfect for summer. Also ordered the BBQ sampler which was melt-in-your-mouth fantastic. The creamed corn was awesome!! A brewery with good food???! The Workshop did not disappoint. Loved the live jazz trio and the cool table saws-turned tables. Very clever. Can't wait to return!

Best beer in traverse by far. Chill environment. Outdoor seating and plenty of games to keep you entertained and off of your phone. I know, ironic right...

Had a great time at Workshop...it's just too bad I was the DD that night! We did not get food but tried about five of their beers, a flight of four plus one pint. Okay, so I had to limit myself to sips, but my passenger for the night was raving about them, too. We tried an ESB, a pale ale, a blanche, and something dark that was not a porter. My memory of the names is failing me, obviously, but all the beers were delicious, flavorful. The prices actually seemed reasonable to me, even for the flight. Traverse City is a tourist attraction, so, yeah, it might be a buck or two more than you find in Detroit or elsewhere, but not shockingly expensive. I wish we had found this place earlier in our stay! I would love to go back.

Great vibe with beer to match. I am not a Saison guy, but the Sickle was very good. The 10 lbs Cascade IPA was excellent. They source as much locally as possible, even the bourbon barrels used for aging and the hops. Not much going on sunday evenings but looks like they have live music fri and sat. While i didnt have any food, the menu looked darn good. Will def be back

Had lunch recently. Split up a couple of sandwiches and a bowl of soup. Sandwiches were very good; soup was good but a bit salty. The beer was average, I would not rate it as especially flavorful but drinkable. Décor was neat, liked the pinball machines and Pac-man. Definitely recommend.

This place is amazing! Great beer! Wonderful food! I recommend the figs & bacon and scotch eggs. They messed up our order, but definitely made it right and then some! We will be back when we are in the area.

The Workshop is located in Right Brain's old home. We had a sampler and our favorite was the Ball Peen. A red with a medium finish. Not too sweet or hoppy and just right. We didn't get a chance to sample the food since we were full from 7 Monks pizza and Moomer's ice cream, but our neighbor had a salad that smelled divine! I will definitely leave some room for vittles the next time I'm there. Bartender "Reggie" (as his mechanic's shirt said) was rock solid and knew his brew. He'd have to since the tap handles aren't marked. Excellent customer service, and he even gave us our credit card's "love note" saying that $1 was charged to hold our tab as we smoked outside. Grateful for the explanation, as I'm a hawk when it comes to credit card charges. A bit disappointed they were sold out of their IPA since I'm a hop-head, but that tells you something, right? Loved the signature symbol (kinda like an infinity symbol but there's probably a name for it--Led Zeppelin-Zoso-esque) being burned into the back entry door above the handle with maybe a branding iron? The old church pews are a classy re-purposing addition that I'd like to see more often in places. Preserve history that way. What topped off our day besides the excellent brew, bartender, relaxed atmosphere, and decor, was the table-top edition of the 80's classic video game Galaga. I almost wet myself since you almost never see this game anywhere especially in a table-top version!!!! Woot, woot!! We were both transported back to 1987, without a flux capacitor, and felt like kids with a pocket full of quarters. Also, I've been to brew-houses and breweries in almost every state (37 out of 50) and I have never ever seen a growler sealed with wax like a Maker's Mark whiskey bottle. Super duper kick-ass cool!! I also liked the blacksmith theme with the anvil--ten penny nail, ball peen hammer, etc. Creative. Markedly surprised with such cheap food options too. Thank you so much for a great visit, and I look forward to seeing you guys again very soon. Keep up the great style and good brew. Welcome to the TVC family!

Had a salad today. Only four bucks and the freshest, tastiest salad I've had in a restaurant in a long time. Like right out of the garden. The tomatoes were wonderful. They say they get as close to organic as they can. Beer was ESB, and even my wife who doesn't drink beer liked it. Sandwiches were good, although the pulled pork could use more umph. This place is catching on. Will they hold the food prices this low, or is it an opening hook?

Great place for friendly drinking experience!! The one handed sandwiches were excellent. Had the turkey, pulled pork, and corned beef one handers and they were all great! Cole slaw, truffle potato salad and baked beans were great! The beer ... Was fabulous. The rasp bastard seasonal was amazing. The blonde ale was great and the porter was delicious and different. The peen ale was also full bodied and smooth. Management was super friendly and personable. Don't miss this gem near the bay!!

This place got added to our list during the tour. Right Brain had a handy little "breweries of Traverse City" pamphlet that showed the in-town breweries, and at another stop someone pointed out The Workshop Brewing Company was brand new, having only opened a couple days prior. So we stopped off there and found a brightly-lit industrial type building with lot of use of the color red and silver. The place was fairly empty, still being new. And they only had 2 beers on tap so far. The beer was good, and they seemed to have an interesting menu for food, so hopefully they do well. We had an interesting conversation with the owner about his glassware. He said he only wanted to stock 1 type of glass, not manage different glassware for each style. So he picked the glass that would best showcase his beers, which was the tulip glass. We had been having a discussion earlier that evening of the tapered-in cone at the top of the glass and how that made IPAs taste great (funnels the hop aromas to make a more concentrated cone directed right at your nose). I, of course felt vindicated that my opinion was vetted by the owner's selection of glassware.

On our mini-tour of the TC breweries, this one sticks out as such an obvious leader of the pack. Having just celebrated their one-year anniversary, I'm so impressed with what they've got going on. First, the beer: we had four samples. And these are 8 oz. pours- not your average sample pours! We enjoyed them all- each very unique. We ended up with a growler of the Uncapper, since we thought it would agree with most of the drinkers we'd share with. Next, the food: It's all wonderful- even the simple farmer's salad that I had. Amazing bacon, that I assume they smoke in-house, or they get it somewhere very high-quality. And the dressings they make are so unique and delicious. I suggest getting a salad for sure- they'll even make you a smaller portion than the ones listed on the menu if you want it as a side. The bison burger (that they smoke!) was so flavorful! We got the pretzels as an appetizer, and these were a showstopper! With their cheese sauce and uncapper mustard- wow. So, so, so delicious! The service: The bartender was so super friendly. She gave us lots of good suggestions, and even gave us some pointers about which breweries were worth checking out before we left town. Everyone was friendly and never acted like they were in a hurry, and were willing to answer questions and chat as much as we liked! I can not wait to return!

Cool, new brewery just a block off the main drag in downtown TC. The girlfriend and I went in here after biking around the area on an afternoon. They had a nice beer garden that overlooks the fermenters. They have been around for a year according to the bartender. The tables are all old workshop items like table saws, etc. that have glass tops on them. They have a Tornado fooseball table, darts, bags, and tons of games. They even have some repurposed church pews with a ton of books in the corner so you can drink and read if you would like. We ended up getting a flight after we found out that they come in huge tulip/sniffer glasses (6oz pours) and proceeded to sit outside. They don't have anything that they serve their flights on rather just give you napkins, which is a bit disappointing yet in one regard refreshing compared to the general rack or paddle that most places use. The food menu looked really good yet we just stuck to a liquid meal that day. It had some great beers and would recommend this place for some good beers and games.

We enjoyed this brewing company. I had a flight that included: Bastard Rasp (a delicious fruit beer with a clean fresh raspberry flavor) ESB Ball peen (my wife enjoyed this beer and typically prefers a malty lightly hopped beer) The remedy (a breakfast stout with a great coffee flavor) And my favorite Wrecking bar (and imperial porter with strong bourbon notes and vanilla caramel flavors. Very smooth) Our server was pleasant and attentive. Most of the beers were available. The flight was nicely priced and sized (4 pours 8oz each). There was a live band playing which was a little loud for what we were looking for that night. But the outdoor seating was a good option. We didn't try the food. But if the food is as good as the beer was, I would be willing to consider adjusting my review up to a five star.

  • Abby B.

Stopped for a beer on our way to dinner downtown. Good beer with lot's of variety. Nice atmosphere, both a lot of indoor and outdoor seating. Close to both downtown and the beach. Tried the pretzels as an appetizer and they were good, a different taste being as though they were a whole grain type but, warm and homemade. The cheese and mustard dipping sauce is where they went wrong. The mustard had a very strong citrus flavor and the cheese sauce was just ok.

My husband and I stopped in for some apps and to try a few brews during our vacation. This place is a little off the "fancy" path of the main downtown Traverse City. It's still totally walkable, though. Just not as heavily travelled as the "main drag" with all the perfectly manicured areas. Workshop must have been a garage before they bought it. They cleaned and sealed the concrete floors, and the whole front of the restaurant can open via huge garage doors to let in the bay breezes. It's rough, it's clean, re purposed and totally awesome looking. I love it inside. This is one of the breweries that actually serves food with their drinks. And the food is AMAZING. We ordered two apps: the homemade pretzels with dips and a sausage and mashed potato app with gravy overtop. Both were incredible and I was trying to gobble up every bit before my husband got to it. Between the awesome food and the delicious beer, it was hard to stop tasting anything! We like some lighter beers and aren't as big fans of all the porters, burbon-barrel aged, DIPA and heavy beers that a lot of breweries are creating. Admire their creativity, but not terribly easy to drink. Workshop has you covered by having a diverse selection of ales, lagers and saisons. We got a growler and really had a very difficult time narrowing it down to which beer we'd fill it with. As we left, the local news came by and was about to interview the owner about some story. We were able to greet the owner and give him our appreciation of the awesome stuff he was doing. It's always awesome to meet the person who can help make memorable moments like this. This was one of the best breweries we stopped at and we really hope they stick around.

My friend's son is in process of opening micro brewery so we decided to visit a number of breweries in Traverse City. A lot of great places in town; however, the best beer we tried was here. Try the Sickle and John Henry.

If you want a scotch egg that will knock your socks off, this is the place. My only reservation was no table service. You are required to go up to the bar and place your own order. Which is hard, when you've been drinking all day, and just lost your socks.

    (4)
  • Kurt S.

Very basic. No table service (waitstaff). I ordered a flight of four beers that I thought I'd like, and would only order one of the four again. Had a flatbread pizza that was small for the price. For those in your party that don't drink beer your soft drinks are syrup out of a bottle and my wife says the diet was terrible. When she went back up to question about it, she was given another one that was worst than the first one, then the guy got rude and said "what do you want then water?" Oh yeah the band was awful also. Couldn't wait to leave here.

Some of the best beer in Michigan. Fantastic food. If you rate an establishment down because you have to walk, go eat at some chain restaurant with a big parking lot.

Great beers! The bartender was super nice and knew about all the beers and just what to recommend as well as gave tasters. We had dinner I had a greek salad which was fresh and full of flavor. My husband had the smoked bison burger which was very good. Great atmosphere.

  • Donald L.

I am being generous when I give one. You can't find a place to park anywhere close to this place, there is no parking available anywhere. Hence, you lost four thirsty people today! I am sure the beer is good but not worth that long of a walk!

    (1)
  • Michael S.

I can't put my finger on how I feel about this place. It was our last stop of the night. The beer was pretty good and the space was open with plenty of seating options. A band (not bad) was playing, but unless you were right in front of them, it was not too loud. Prices were not bad and the staff was efficient. May it seemed like there was a bit too much confusion to the place. Most seemed to be having a great time, though.

  • Erik A.

Impressive new bar in TC's warehouse district. In a town that seems to pride ourselves on throwing pigs, figs, and whatever else we can find into our beers, their approach to making traditional time honored beers is refreshing. Highly recommend their bierre blanche and saison. Hop jockeys won't be disappointed either. Their food is equally good with some unexpected offerings, and fairly priced considering the quality of ingredients. Definitely not typical bar food (minus the soft pretzels). Parking is a bit awkward with the only real lot around back by Xylo, and lots of construction currently underway out front. Monday trivia night at 7:00 is fun and pretty competitive. People must really want that $25 gift card.

I eat mostly organic, local and GMO-free at home and for that reason don't normally enjoy eating out - but that is not the case at the Workshop Brewing Company. They are using heavily organic / NON-GMO products. I took my parents and kids for a quick bite and we all enjoyed it. Tasty sandwiches and the kids loved their meals. We have tried a few of the beers and they have been exceptional as well. Pretty excited with this new option in Traverse City.

This is my ideal gastro-pub experience. The warehouse space is awesome and offers something for everyone. Couches, benches, tables, or bar seating plus outdoor seating. The beer is delicious and the food is creative. I tried a sampler of four beers and ordered both their special soup and salad of the day- coconut shrimp soup and a Cajun-inspired salad. My appetite was whetted so then I ordered their bison burger with a fried egg. I came on a Saturday night and there was live music without a cover charge. They also have darts, pinball, and foozball plus settlers of Catan! And a little library. Like I said, it's my ideal spot and if I lived in TC I'd be here all the freaking time.

Amazing beers and the food is outstanding!! My girl and I had the most amazing Korean tacos tonight!! Service is a little lacking in the evening as I'm a normal lunch customer when service is great. All in all one of my favorite places in TC.

    (5)
  • Alysha B.

Pretty cool place. Had live music when i went but if there was no live music there were games to play. Nice open space that was outside of the boutique-ness of Traverse City main street. Was in a warehouse looking place but the atmosphere is cool and some decent beers. Haven't tried the food because the selection wasn't too great, just limited in variety for a brewery but i still really liked the place!

Counter service only - but service was good. Lots of varieties on tap - large board explaining style/alcohol content/price. Food looked good but didn't eat here. Nice band playong inside. Enough seating.options throughout to handle the crowds.

The Workshop I had never heard of the Workshop until discovering it on accident while searching for another brewery. Needless to say, a very cool spot. They usually have at least 12 beers to try, and their menu is innovative and the portions perfectly sized. A couple of appetizers will usually do. Because they bill themselves a zero-waste facility, most everything gets reused. I had the spent grain pretzels and seared pork belly. The beer is good, but I've only tried a handful. The decor, that of an actual mechanical workshop, is unique. A must for anybody with eclectic tastes passing through the Traverse City area. As an added bonus, within walking distance of North Peak Brewing.

By far one of my favorite breweries in traverse city. Amazing beer. Great staff and awesome food. Skip the mainstream and go here.
